dhobi ghat
watched dhobi ghat. loved it. the sheer simplicity with which complexity has been portrayed, realistic and yet not wallowing in self pity, the screenplay, the editing, the direction, the acting, the freshness. very engaging. very well done.
have come to appreciate kiran rao's work. aamir's ability to pick interesting subjects and good scripts for production impresses me yet again. not to mention his ability to give an understated yet convincing performance. continue to love his work!
apart from the movie itself, watching it reminded me of my time in bbay.. a very special time, where i laughed, cried, enjoyed, n actually lived. its like i spent a lifetime in a span of a little over a year. i loved the city n the city loved me back. the amazing thing is that there was nothing great to write home about, just the existance, the feel, the time, the experience.. little things like the time spent sitting by the sea, the auto rides back to our friendly pad at unearthly hours (not by b'bay standards), the amazing places for trekking and photography at 2-3 hour rides.. just about everything.. miss u, bombay!

lol! :)) theek hai, mumbai. names for me are not a big deal. for me it is and will be bbay..:D watch the movie, they too say bbay. thankfully, a big deal wasn't made of it.
jai hind!!!
If it is not a big deal, then what is the problem in calling it Mumbai?
Why does one need to be so rigid and inflexible for a name which is not ours and given to us by British Rulers and Colonizers.
For records and info, the name Mumbai is derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba—the name of the Koli goddess Mumbadevi—and Aai, "mother" in the language of Marathi.
With time, it became Bambai. And when Britishers were unable to pronounce Bambai, they called in their accent as Bombay.
We are an independent and sovereign nation now. Its good that we can shed those words and names which Britishers had put on us - which they were unable to pronounce.
We are Indians and can easily pronounce the names of our cities. We don't want names which someone was not able to pronounce.
I hope this gives a slight insight to the English speaking audience that why Mumbai...
thanks for the detailed, informative, insight! i think U just made a big deal out of it. and u missed the fact that i already said mumbai, in my comment above. the place may have got its name a certain way historically, going back to the colonial rule time - as did madras vs chennai, and various other cities and roads and other landmarks. but for me, when i say i don't make a big deal about names, it is just that - it is a name and i don't need to fight it, a name that evolved with changes that happened in history. taking a name that the city acquired does not make me subservient to a colonial mindframe, rather is indicative of a mindset that cares about real issues, not trivia made into issues. i believe we don't need to insist on renaming roads and cities to express our sovereignty. i am sovereign in spirit and thought, accepting the diversity and independence of our nation, embracing people from different religions and cultures as indians, thinking of myself as an indian first - and a priviledged one to be that. it is amusing how u call urself 'memumbaikar', insist on saying 'jai maharashtra', and not jai hind, and then talk about sovereignty!
jai hind.
Wonderful Shalini!:)
Sovereignty is indeed in spirit & in mind not just namesake which unfortunately people; akka people with political interest have made it - when you visit the chawls & the pedestrian lanes of Mumbai, the infamous Dharavi or get into a local train during office hours - it hardly matters at that time whether it's Mumbai or Bombay - at that time what matters is the determination and grit of people who are actually INDIANS!
Isn't it sad that RajKapoor's song in 1950s is true to every word till now and even after 60 yrs of independence, we see teh same Mumbai...
Aye dil hai mushkil jeena yahan Zara hat ke zara bach ke, yeh hai BOMBAY meri jaan...
Yes it is JAI HIND!!
err not rajkapoor - its was johny walker & dev anand
